Size

We recommend your coffee table be roughly the same height as the seat of the matching chair or chairs. The closer the height to the seat level, the more the table can act as functional member of the room and not just a design asset. A basic question you might want to ask is: does this coffee table fit the style or theme of my other pieces. Is it a convenient height compared to my sofa or armchairs?

Space

Hitting your shins and stubbing your toes on a poorly place table is generally looked on as a bad thing by all parties. Easily avoid this with a little pre-planning. Look at how you want foot traffic to flow around your room. For a larger room it might be helpful to make a small sketch on a piece of paper or your computer. It is a good idea to not too squish your table too close to your sofa, but you also do not want it too far away so that you have to bend way over just to access the surface of the table. There is no hard and fast rule when it comes to seat-to-table-distance, and you might want to experiment for what works for you. We recommend starting with something around 18” to 20” inches away from your seat. You do not want a coffee table to run the entire length of a sofa, so you have room to get in and out. Look for tables that are roughly seventy-five percent of the length of your couch, sofa, or armchairs.
